“Like a National Geographic trip – only better! – Sergio and Lydia packed so much into this magical week I returned home inspired, infused, and invigorated! We began our days with a meditation beside a magnificent Cardon cactus, then off on any number of adventures, learning about the area’s history and culture through encounters with its people – ranchers, bakers, activists, painters … even its whales! … and with our fellow travelers. Our two professors had thought of everything, from where to take a secluded sunset walk, which museums/galleries were truly outstanding, where to go for mouth-watering local cuisine. We were “off the beaten path” in wonderful ways, yet still had time to relax and unwind most evenings on Cerritos Beach. The trip was bilingual, meaning you could participate in every aspect of it either in English, Spanish, or a mix of both. For someone (like me) looking for opportunities to practice their Spanish but without pressure, this trip was truly amazing.”

“My trip with Tonalli to Baja California Sur was an unforgettable experience. The scenery was absolutely beautiful, and everyday was filled with fun activities and memorable excursions. From the breathtaking landscapes to the wonderful local culture, there was always something to enjoy.

What made this trip special, however, were the people. The travel group was welcoming and friendly, and I had the opportunity to meet many wonderful people during our excursions. Sharing laughs, conversations, and new experiences with them made the trip even more meaningful. I returned home not only with great memories and beautiful photos, but also with new friendships that I hope will last for years to come.

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who helped make this such a memorable vacation. I highly recommend this trip to anyone looking forward to a perfect combination of relaxation, adventure, and the chance to meet amazing people.”

“Great company and wonderful vacation. The guides, Sergio and Lydia, did a fine job of planning each day that included events at a ranch, bakery, and potter's and artist's studio, in addition to visiting points of interest in the area. All the lunches were excellent and served family style so that we could sample many dishes at different local restaurants. No one left hungry. Accommodations were also first class. I would not hesitate to vacation with Tonalli, again..”

“I had an incredible time with Lydia and Sergio. Our trip to Baja California Sur was packed with rich cultural and natural experiences, topped off by stunning Baja sunsets. The activities were not only fun but also deeply educational. I was impressed by their expertise and warm hospitality, blending the depth of university professors with humor and friendliness. It truly felt like traveling with friends and family. I’d highly recommend them to anyone looking to explore on a deeper level that goes far beyond typical tourism.”

“Sergio and Lydia were incredible guides who increased my understanding of Spanish, my understanding of Mexico, and my awareness also of the important cultural concept of communal land ownership and communal access to the ocean. As the daughter of Irish immigrants, I know that once upon a time, in Ireland, land was owned communally. It still is today in Mexico. I found it deeply meaningful to meet a ranching family who live on communally owned land shared with 36 other families, and to learn more about the story of fisherman in the state of Baja California Sur who were almost jilted out of their communal rights to use a beach, which had sustained them for generations and was their patrimony, by Colorado real estate developers and Mexican collaborators. Shame on us, Colorado! Thankfully the fishermen fought back legally and regained the right to use part of the beach, although the luxury hotel that was built is still causing terrible erosion.

Sergio and Lydia, thank you for the Spanish, thank you for the awakening, thank you for this trip. It has changed me.”

“Incredible cultural immersion experience!
Sergio and Lydia were phenomenal guides. Knowledgeable, kind, and passionate. They led us through a meaningful blend of history, language, and hands-on cultural experiences. The highlight was visiting a local ranch, where we made cheese and tortillas and learned about multigenerational life and the real challenges ranchers face during a long drought. I left with a deeper understanding of the region and so much appreciation for the people and culture. Highly recommend if you want more than just a tourist experience…this was truly unforgettable!”

“I am from Puebla, and this was my first time in Baja California Sur. What a unique and beautiful place! It is so different from the rest of Mexico. BCS is truly an enchanting land.

From the first day, the hospitality and kindness of Sergio and Lydia was incredible. They pay attention to every detail, and all the activities were very meaningful. Honestly, I wanted the trip to last more than one week!

Every destination was special, but visiting El Triunfo was magical. I learned so much about the mining history and the ranching traditions of the region. And of course I had to try the pitaya ice cream and the coconut ice cream... Yum! I also loved trying machaca de res, a very regional dish of the area.

Something I really appreciated were the cultural conversations. It was a true exchange. Spanish is my native language, but I wanted to practice my English, so I participated in English and I felt very comfortable doing it.

The amenities were impeccable. I loved the pool with a cardón cactus in the center, so beautiful!

I 100% recommend Tonalli. Thank you for this wonderful experience. I hope to come back soon!”
