We wandered, discovered, savored, and shared—connecting with the people, traditions, and landscapes that make Baja California Sur so unforgettable.
The story of BCS 2026 is ultimately a story about people and connections. While we were constantly inspired by the stunning landscapes of the peninsula—the desert, the sea, the mountains of the sierra, and the pueblos we visited—the most memorable part of the experience was the people who opened their homes, workshops, and communities to us.
We worked with clay in the Sierra de la Laguna, learning from a master potter whose craft has been passed down through generations and gaining a deeper appreciation for the connection between art and the natural world. At a local ranch, we learned how artisanal cheese is made and how the touch of our hands contributes to the taste and texture of a tortilla. During a bread-baking workshop, we saw how generations of knowledge are transmitted through practice, observation, and experience, learning how a baker adjusts leavening and technique based on the day's temperature and humidity rather than relying solely on a recipe.
Conversations with community activists and local leaders opened our eyes to the complexities of water rights, environmental stewardship, and the collective efforts required to protect vital resources. Along the way, we met artisans, activists, and changemakers whose stories expanded our understanding of resilience, identity, and cultural preservation. But perhaps the most transformative aspect of this journey was the growth that happened within ourselves: we discovered talents or connected with them again. Drawing, writing, meditating, and expressing ourselves with confidence in a second language came naturally and reminded us of what we could do... We returned home not only with new knowledge, but also with deeper friendships and a stronger sense of curiosity, connection, and possibility. That's the magic of Tonalli.
La historia de BCS 2026 es, en pocas palabras, una historia de personas y conexiones. Aunque nos inspiraron constantemente los impresionantes paisajes de la península —el desierto, el mar, las montañas de la sierra y los pueblos que visitamos—, la parte más memorable de la experiencia fueron las personas que nos abrieron las puertas de sus hogares, talleres y comunidades.
Trabajamos el barro en la Sierra de la Laguna, aprendiendo de una maestra alfarera cuyo oficio ha sido transmitido de generación en generación, y desarrollando una profunda apreciación por la conexión entre el arte y el mundo natural. En un rancho de la sierra, aprendimos cómo se elabora el queso artesanal y cómo el contacto de nuestras manos contribuye al sabor y la textura de una tortilla. Durante un taller de panadería, vimos cómo los conocimientos se transmiten de generación en generación a través de la práctica, la observación y la experiencia, aprendiendo cómo un panadero ajusta la levadura según la temperatura y la humedad del día, en lugar de depender únicamente de una receta.
Las conversaciones con activistas comunitarios y líderes locales nos abrieron los ojos a las complejidades de los derechos al agua, el cuidado del medio ambiente y los esfuerzos colectivos para proteger recursos vitales. Conocimos a artesanos, activistas y agentes de cambio cuyas historias ampliaron nuestra comprensión de la resiliencia, la identidad y la preservación cultural. Pero quizás el aspecto más transformador de este viaje fue el crecimiento que ocurrió dentro de nosotros mismos: descubrimos talentos que no sabíamos que teníamos, o reconectamos con ellos. Dibujar, escribir, meditar y expresarnos con confianza en un segundo idioma surgieron de manera natural recordándonos todo lo que somos capaces de lograr. Regresamos a casa no solo con nuevos conocimientos, sino también con amistades profundas y un renovado sentido de curiosidad, conexión y posibilidad. Esa es la magia de Tonalli.
BCS 2025: A Journey to Remember
We explored, reflected, savored, celebrated, and connected—honoring the stories, flavors, and spirit of this place.
We’re thrilled to share that our 2025 cultural immersion trip to Baja California Sur was a resounding success! The experience embodied Tonalli’s commitment to traveling differently: broadening worldviews, challenging assumptions, and fostering greater awareness of inequality and privilege, resourcefulness and resiliency. It was a journey that nurtured empathy, adaptability, and intercultural understanding—not only for our travelers, but for everyone involved in the exchange.
With a small group of engaged participants, we explored the region through authentic, hands-on experiences that deepened understanding and sparked meaningful connection and dialogue.
At Tonalli, we’re proud to support local initiatives and women-led enterprises while cultivating human connection and cultural empathy. We sailed with a women-owned outfitter of local marine biologists, who shared their expertise on the diverse ecosystem of Isla Espíritu Santo. We engaged in conversations with artists and activists committed to balancing tradition and innovation in BCS. We also spent a day immersed in ranching life with a local family who, encouraged by our visit and supported by the income earned, have since launched a successful new enterprise offering their traditional dishes for takeout.
Experiences like engaging with the complexities of communally owned land and learning about the fight to preserve traditional ways of life in the face of unsustainable development help participants grasp the lived realities behind the landscapes. This is what transformation through travel looks like—and we can’t wait to do it again.
