One year ago, Tonalli Cultural Immersions began with a simple but powerful idea: to create travel experiences that bring people into authentic cultural encounters.That vision came to life last summer in Baja California Sur.The experience reflected Tonalli’s commitment to traveling differently. We immersed ourselves in the peninsula’s vaquero heritage by visiting a traditional ranch in the Sierra de la Laguna, explored local artistic traditions through studio and gallery visits, and even tried our hand at painting. We also discovered the rich marine life of the Gulf of California, including snorkeling with sea lions near Isla Espíritu Santo. Along the way, we engaged in meaningful conversations with fishermen, ranchers, and activists, deepening our understanding of inequality and privilege, as well as the resourcefulness and resilience within local communities. The journey invited both curiosity and reflection, fostering empathy, adaptability, and intercultural understanding—not only for our travelers, but for everyone involved in the exchange. This is what continues to inspire our work.Tonalli Cultural Immersions is guided by educators who believe learning expands through lived experience. Each journey is small and thoughtfully designed, creating space for dialogue, curiosity, and real human connection. Our bilingual Spanish English immersions invite participants to engage more fully—with language, with culture, and with each other.And we are just getting started.Looking ahead, we return to Baja California Sur June 13–20, 2026, continuing our commitment to travel that is reflective, relational, and rooted in mutual exchange. Pequeño momento de Puerto Rico

El mes pasado tuve la oportunidad de regresar a mi isla para celebrar los 125 años de mi escuela en Mayagüez, donde pasé los primeros dieciséis años de mi vida. Allí cursé desde kínder hasta duodécimo grado, aunque lo cierto es que casi nací allí, porque mi mamá era maestra de primaria. En aquel entonces era un colegio de niñas, pero desde hace varias décadas es de niños y niñas. Me pareció hermoso que, durante la celebración, al cantar el himno de la escuela, las de mi época lo hiciéramos con la letra de antes, siempre en femenino: “Estas niñas a ti confiadas…”, tal y como vive en nuestra memoria.Tuve también la oportunidad de visitar la Biblioteca Juvenil de Mayagüez, un espacio acogedor para los niños del área y sus familias, con una impresionante colección de literatura infantil bilingüe. Me emocionó poder compartir mis libros y celebrar ese lugar tan especial. ¡Y luego disfrutar de un brazo gitano de guayaba típico de mi pueblo!Casualmente, mi visita coincidió con el espectáculo de medio tiempo de Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio (Bad Bunny), que fue televisado gratuitamente en muchos puntos de la isla. Me conmovió el poder de unificación que tuvo este evento en un momento en que parece acecharnos la división. Aunque no todos coinciden en apreciar su música, muchos admiramos que haya llevado con orgullo la cultura, la historia y la lengua puertorriqueña a uno de los escenarios más importantes del mundo.Por último, no podía faltar una visita a mi querida playa Domes, en Rincón, donde pasé tantos momentos felices en mi juventud. Pequeño momento de Baja California Sur

Recuerdo la primera vez que viajé a Baja California Sur, en 2014. Cuando llegué al desierto cerca de Todos Santos, sentí algo difícil de explicar: una energía tranquila que parecía venir de la tierra misma. El paisaje era inmenso—el desierto dorado, las montañas a lo lejos y el océano Pacífico respirando lentamente frente a mí.En ese momento sentí como si la tierra me hablara. No con palabras, sino con una presencia profunda y silenciosa. Había viento, luz y una calma que invitaba a detenerse y escuchar el paisaje.Desde 2018, Baja California Sur se ha convertido en mi segundo hogar. Nací en Guadalajara, Jalisco, pero Baja California Sur es mi hogar por elección. Paso parte del año en Boulder, Colorado, pero siempre regreso a este lugar que me ha enseñado a mirar el tiempo de otra manera.El proceso de construir una casa aquí ha sido largo, pero también ha sido un proceso lleno de intención. Cada paso, cada decisión, cada piedra colocada forma parte de algo más grande.En Baja uno aprende que todo tiene su ritmo.Y que cada pequeño detalle cuenta.

A Note on Recent News from Mexico
|
Many of you may have seen recent news about violence in parts of Mexico following the February 22 operation in which Mexican authorities killed Nemesio Rubén Oseguera Cervantes, the leader of the Cártel Jalisco Nueva Generación. In the aftermath, there were incidents such as road blockades and cars set on fire in several areas of western and central Mexico, particularly in and around Puerto Vallarta and other parts of Jalisco.Mexico is a very large and diverse country. Our Tonalli Cultural Immersion takes place in Baja California Sur, on the Baja peninsula along the Pacific Ocean—more than 1,200 miles from the regions where those events occurred. Life here continues as normal, far removed from the disruptions reported in other parts of the country.I share this perspective not only as an educator and cultural guide, but also from personal experience. I live part of the year in Baja California Sur, where I have a home near Todos Santos. I also have family in Jalisco as well as in Baja California Sur, and the contrast between these regions is quite striking.Life in towns such as Todos Santos and La Paz moves at a very different rhythm. Communities are small, and daily life centers around the ocean, local markets, agriculture, and the arts. Visitors often remark on the sense of calm and openness they experience there, where everyday routines continue peacefully and without interruption.Like travel anywhere in the world, awareness and respect for local contexts are always important. At the same time, many people are surprised to discover that Baja California Sur feels peaceful, welcoming, and deeply connected to the natural landscape. It is precisely this environment that allows Tonalli to create meaningful cultural experiences rooted in community, nature, and conversation.—Sergio A. Macías

Choyero / ChoyeraEn Baja California Sur, la palabra choyero se usa para referirse a las personas nacidas en el estado. Es una forma cariñosa de hablar de la gente local y de su identidad.El origen del término viene del choya, un tipo de cactus muy común en el desierto de Baja. Con el tiempo, el nombre del cactus se convirtió en una manera de describir a quienes pertenecen profundamente a esta tierra desértica.Ser choyero no solo significa haber nacido en Baja California Sur. También evoca una relación cercana con el paisaje, el mar, el desierto y las tradiciones de la región.
